Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is an advanced, minimally invasive surgical technique for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in older men that causes difficulty urinating, a weak stream, urgency, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
Unlike other surgeries, HoLEP is performed through the urethra, without the need for external incisions. Using a high-precision laser, the prostate tissue blocking the flow of urine is removed. This tissue is pushed into the bladder and fragmented with a device called a morcellator, allowing for its safe and complete removal.
It is a particularly useful technique for large or highly symptomatic prostates and offers long-lasting results with little need for reoperation. Furthermore, as a minimally invasive procedure, it allows for a faster recovery, with less bleeding and a shorter hospital stay.
